Why Wreaths?
The history of holiday wreaths offers rich symbolism, spanning ancient pagan, Roman, and Christian traditions. Originally, wreaths represented victory, honour, and eternal cycles in cultures like ancient Greece and Rome, where evergreen plants held symbolic meaning for endurance and continuity through winter’s challenges. In pre-Christian Europe, evergreens were incorporated into wreaths as symbols of life’s persistence, marking the winter solstice as a time of hope and anticipation for the return of spring.
In Christian traditions, wreaths became more prominent in Advent celebrations, symbolising eternal life and the divine love of God. The circular shape of the wreath represents life’s unbroken continuity, reinforcing its symbolic endurance through the seasons. This tradition continues today, where wreaths embody both a festive and deeply rooted spiritual meaning, making them a staple for holiday decorations across the world.
